American Forces Memorial Display at Newton Village Hall

American Forces Memorial Display at Newton Village Hall

During October, Newton Village Hall is hosting a display concerning the new American Forces Memorial, which is to be erected near the entrance of the hall and dedicated during a service conducted by the Bishop of Brecon and Swansea, at 2.30 pm on Friday 2nd November.

One of the many memories contributed to this project has come from Bill Barrington MBE, the Verger of All Saints’ Church. He revealed that in the spring of 1944, before taking part in the Normandy Landings, he was given embarkation leave, during which he married his fiancée Veronica Weekes. He recalled as he passed some American GIs, gathered outside Saint Peter’s Church Hall, they were greatly impressed by his full dress army uniform, which he explained he was wearing in readiness for his wedding. As a result of recent publicity, Oystermouth Historical Association has also been contacted by relatives of American GIs who have shared accounts of their wartime service in Swansea and Mumbles.

Additionally, at 7.30 on Thursday 18th October, at Ostreme Centre, Mumbles, Oystermouth Historical Association will welcome Glenn Booker, an historian, who will give a talk entitled, OVER HERE! AMERICAN GIs IN SWANSEA AND GOWER DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. Guest entry is £2 including refreshments.

Please support the appeal to cover the cost of manufacture and future maintenance of the American Forces Memorial
by sending your contributions to:
