Legion d' Honneur

Legion d' Honneur

We reported last month that our Verger Emeritus, Bill Barrington MBE, was awarded the French Legion of Honour at a special ceremony at Holme, Peterborough, last month.

The ceremony was held at the Church he now attends, near to where he lives with his daughter, Jane, and the family.

Bill is one of the few remaining veterans of the Normandy landings and the honour given to him is in recognition of his role, with other veterans, in the liberation of France.

As well as being our Verger he is also the President of the Mumbles and South Gower Branch of the Royal British Legion. He has also been a lifelong supporter of the RNLI and, during the rebuilding of the new boathouse in Mumbles, raised over £32,000 in 2013 through a bucket collection outside the old Co-op supermarket. It was a truly remarkable achievement for a then sprightly 93 year old.

Bill is Mumbles through and through and it goes without saying that he is greatly loved and respected in our community. We have invited him to be the Guest of Honour' at a special Patronal Festival Service on Sunday morning 28th October, led by the Archbishop of Wales, when we will celebrate the restoration of our Parish Church. We hope that he will be well enough to join us.

Many congratulations Bill.
